Colin Montgomerie happy as Padraig Harrington in contention at Barclays

When Colin Montgomerie heard the news that Padraig Harrington had moved into contention at the Barclays in New York, Europe's Ryder Cup captain nodded his approval like a gnarly prophet who has long known a thing or two about destiny. The jacket is now all but on Harrington's shoulders.
Montgomerie said: "That's good. They're doing well. I knew they might. That makes the job tougher in many ways and easier in others. We have to wait and see, but I was sure about Padraig when his back's to the wall he's done awfully well in the past. So all credit to him for showing some form when he has to.
"I have for the last couple of months and I was interested in the way he reacted to taking six at the last to miss the cut by one. Within five minutes of signing his card he was on the range. Christ. That says a lot about what he wants to do and what he wants to achieve."

The morning starters in America and the afternoon starters in Scotland were almost playing their rounds simultaneously and as Harrington made his move towards a 68, Edoardo Molinari birdied four of his last six holes to move to three shots behind the leaders at the Johnnie Walker Championship.
Monty said: "The guys here, they've all done very well. Simon Dyson is still there, Edoardo Molinari is still there, we've got Jimenez that's come and played very well. It's super that everyone has been performing to the best of their ability. Unfortunately I can't please everybody. I've got to leave out some winners."
Maybe Monty is fooling the bookies. Maybe Monty is up on the mound throwing curveballs. But it doesn't sound too good for the players who have taken the captain at his word and come to compete at Gleneagles.
"It's been a great season. I've won, had a lot of top 10s and come second in America, too. So if I don't make it, I can count myself unlucky. There's been a lot of great players playing great golf.
"I think the way I've played this year I'd already be in his mind and if not one of his picks then at least close to a pick. So if I win this week I think the pressure will be huge."
